Welcome to my channel! I post monthly videos on a mixture of film analyses, retrospectives, politics and just absolutely overthinking anything to do with pop culture.
Spoiler warnings are placed on videos that discuss shows/movies with a twist, recent shows/movies, or shows/movies that aren't the subject of the video. If you're watching a video about a show/movie that is over a decade old, very famous in pop culture, and the subject of my video - then please watch at your own discretion.
My business email is linked on this page. Please be mindful that I receive a great number of requests for academic interviews, reviewing or promoting films (particularly student films), and guest speaking on podcasts. I try my best to respond to these inquiries - but I cannot commit myself to all of them, so I have to be sparing. This does not reflect on the quality of your research, film, or podcast - and more so that I don't want to spread myself too thin! Apologies if I don't get back to you!

If you've watched First Reformed and felt like it changed your life, you're not the only one! First Reformed was Paul Schrader's first attempt at a style of cinema he himself coined back in 1972: the Transcendental Style, and there's a reason it has some an impact. Burton never declined
I don't care, I'M JUST KEN and you can't take that from me!
The only thing i like about this movie is Richard E Grants performance in the bloody pie scene
fantastic video. unrelated, but u are gorgeous.
The Talented Mr Ripley is an absolutely riveting film. Incredibly well acted and a real thriller.
Stanley was squealing on the behavior of the elites in our world and Eyes Wide Shut didn’t even mention the worst part. Like what these people (elites) do to children.
Karate Kid is not exactly a weepie. But a good male role model movie.
My expectations of Barbie were kind of set when were introduced to Barbie land as a utopia that still has a mountain Washington. An attempt at intersectional feminism, constantly under cut by its own its girl power white feminist capitalist leanings. The films ties to whiteness and a literal corporation are hard to ignore. I liked Barbie more than I didn’t, I had fun watching it, but it’s not without criticism. I don’t enjoy being told it exists in a vacuum, or that I’m bad for women if I critique it.
By this time in Tim Burton's life, he had done so much. What have I done? Nothing.
I will never understand why women think that men are threatened by women flowing into the workplace. Maybe the media and marketing had a lot to do with the brainwashing. Society now think that masculinity is angry, overly aggressive men ready to fight at the drop of the dime. That idea is a glorified false view portrayed by the media. This false view paints men as toxic. What they call toxic is a very small minority of men. Of course the negative side of things will always garners the most attention and have the most impact when people refuse to do research and educate themselves on facts. Women will never understand what masculinity truly is unless they were raised up around boys and men or by throwing out half of the established nonsense that’s currently circulating and approach the topic of masculinity with an open mind and willingness to truly learn what it is and what it means.

I'm sorry but I have always LOVED Selena Gomez and Miley is just not in the same genre! She's like the Madonna of her generation!
When I was watching Slatburn, I couldn't stop thinking of Parasite. Its not 1 to 1 but still has the main theme of lower class infiltrating and replacing the higher class. And while I fairly liked Saltburn, I had a feeling that I would rather be watching parasite right now.
Everyone in this comment section needs to watch Plein Soleil aka Purple Noon, the original film and better than both The Talented Mr Ripley and Saltburns.
look kid you are not the king Elvis so stop trying go be who God made you to be.
People who loved homework making UA-cam videos. This isn’t disagreeing with you. Just saying cmon. How but some more character
Great analysis! As a formerTim Burton-Fan i really enjoyed this video! Instant subscribe 👏🏻
i love stella dallas so much. i cry everytime
Glenn looks like an uncle compared to Sydney who looks like a high school cheer leader. 35:20 , 37:30 As Late stage capitalism is already in action especially in the imperial core nations ,people in these nations prefer a more clinical/cold approach to relationship-e-dating culture(more of a dating market where initial impression is the prominent factor more than ever which restricts people from interacting with each other, hook up culture (considering having large of no. of sexual partners as a positive thing ,seen as a good way to gain social capital, that's not true in the imperial peripheral/3rd world narions) Maybe in 20 years(when more capital is being generated in those nations, more people will have as much free time as ye first worlders/people from the imperial core nations does, to date, engage in hook up culture) people in imperial peripheral nations would also act like people in the imperial core nations.
beautiful.
HOLY GOD , I AM DOOMED
“I kept asking myself, who was this film made for? It’s too graphic to be targeted toward children but too inexplicably goofy to be taken seriously by adults.” Lol, Sleepy Hollow was my faaaave when I was 11-12 at the time, but you’re so right, it would have been vastly improved with a less cartoony Depp performance.
This made me pretty emotional. Thank you for this video. It means a lot that you took the time to make it. This is the first time I have heard the term heroic masculinity. It feels nice to hear there is a positive view of masculinity at all. It feels nice not to feel like I am inherently bad, wrong, or somehow worse for being a man and having male role models. I am going to go call my Dad and tell him I love him, and when I get home, I am going to hug my daughter and tell her I love her.
i remember watching saltburn and my precise thoughts were "i don't know whether i like this film or i hate it. i think i hate it." i was obsessed with trying to parse out my feelings for this movie for a month but then i completely forgot how i felt about it. it just passed through my brain like trying to digest a smoothie. i'm just left empty and with nothing. this film is nothing. it's made to be an aesthetic. you can't tell me there is any reason for this film to be shot in 4:3 other than it wants to be pinned over and over on pinterest.
i wrote down my thoughts on saltburn back in february and they are almost 1:1 with this comment.
Saltburn wasnt bad. Was a hella creepy movie tbh and the twist was honestly pretty horrifying the dinner scene after the death was intense. Teenage girl reccomended this movie to me 😂
Bridgerton is trash
Colorblind as long as black are higher social class at every interaction
Little Women 1994, 2017 and 2018 all directed, produced and written by women, Little Women 2019 promotion: First Little Women made by women for women.. The entire promotion of the movie is based on lying. Also if you read Louisa May Alcott's diaries, she wanted to marry Henry David Thoreau and start a school with him (which is what Jo does), that is why Little Women is actually a wish fulfillment (we speak about this all the time in the little women podcast). Also Laurie is based on Alcott's ex, To be honest I think Gerwig only cares about money. Her characters completely lack growth or self-inspection. Her Barbie is another versio of her Jo. In the 2019 film guide, Gerwig talked about how she wanted to make a mockery of the book. Then in all the interviews, she talked how much she loved the book. Another lie. In the film guide, she said that Jo is a child who does not want to grow up and take responsibility..and that Laurie wants Jo to "step into adulthood" wtf. In the book, it is the opposite, Jo doesn't want to be with Laurie because he is immature and is harrassing her. That is really why she falls in love with Friedrich, she wants a man who is more mature. There another lie. People really should call out Greta Gerwig of all the misinformaton she is spreading, just for money I guess. What bothers me the most, is that, she genuenly doesn't seem to have any clue what actually happens in little women. she says that she has read it but she really doesn't seem to know what happens in it, I can't believe she has.
this this THIS
There is an 80s version of Sleepy Hollow with Jeff Goldblum as Ichabod Crane. He is the hero and gets the girl (not like in the book). I wonder if Burton used that as an inspiration, more than the novel. Goldblum I think actually resembles Crane a bit more than Johnny, with his skinny looks and awkwardness. It's a great version.
Marie Antoinette changed the way I looked at history. I'd only considered them as historical figures... never as the popular kids. Teenagers. Changes everything. Adds one more layer of understanding. I wish I could thank her for helping me see it.
I can’t be the only one who heard her say “Richard Dreyfus” 💀 6:14
please make a video on jane schoenbrun’s cinematic oeuvre i would love to see your take on their works !!
15:34 I`m a bit surprised that Britney Spears said that the Paparazzis should leave her alone. Because its from "Celebrity-101" that about 90% of all paparazzi-photos are staged or arranged by the management of the Celebrity. Spears had a very bad management or her whole fame went above her head.
Idk, I think him dating monica belluci makes me think he is trying to impress those popular kids in high school that made him feel like an outcast.
it is just softcore porn of no value.
As someone who doesn’t like romcoms, one I’ve always enjoyed (in part from nostalgia) is “Just My Luck” starring Lindsey Lohan. It has the typical character stereotypes of a romcom but we get to see both characters interact at their lowest and highest as they completely switch roles. both characters have their own quirks along with really good world building. I really enjoyed Lohans forced character development too
I didn't even know about this until 48 hrs had an episode. Very poor journalism by 48hrs.
4:10 Diana was just a master of selfmarketing. And the people jumped on it.
2:12 Fame comes (often) with a lot of money and connections! And this leads to power. At least to some level. Of course, an A-list-actor will never be as powerfull as a US-Senator or the president. But in his peergroup, he can become quite powerfull.
If I’m being honest , I do think Wednesday is an example of Burton’s decline
The dichotomy of discovering such a well founded critical take of a movie you adore. Such great analysis, you’re truly in a league of your own
Shelley Duvall got him the meeting with Paul Reubens
I'm watching it for the first time and furious that they still made racism exist in this universe -_-
As much as all celebrities are abused in some way by the industry, I have to say Britney’s story impacts me the most. She genuinely seemed so disinterested in the Hollywood life
it felt more like a film confirming the anxieties of the upper classes and dominant social groups surrounding revolution from oppressed groups rather than a critique of the system. it felt like a flashing neon sign saying 'yes, these poor people DO want to kill you, this is because they ARE monsters, so you SHOULD be afraid and never let them get close to you or give them handouts because otherwise they'll kill you and they're wealthy enough to survive anyway'.
You did a great job making an interesting topic hard to listen to for even 3 minutes. I'm out
I didnt know thats why bestdressed disappeared:(
The entire second half of the movie is avoidable for the Kim family. By the midpoint, they have infiltrated the house staff entirely. But they get too comfortable - when the Park family goes camping for the son’s birthday party, they get a bit carried away drinking and partying before the old housekeeper comes back. Also, the Kim mother’s contempt for the old housekeeper - “don’t call me sis” gets thrown back in her face as soon as the rest of her family is revealed. If she’d practiced class solidarity instead, they would have likely been able to reach an understanding. That former housekeeper was only looking for a way to kept her husband safe and fed.
Interesting remark from Schrader about "more is more" being a Catholic tendency, as Bresson is one of the most prominent Catholic directors and he certainly believed the "less is more" principle.
